A talented nine year old has just published her first book, Poems and Stories for Little People (written by one). Miranda Sofia, a Year 4 pupil at St Augustine’s Priory, Ealing, London.
She was born in London in the lap of a Latino family, with roots in Venezuela. She started creating images and stories from the age of four and together with her little sister, Maxima, she has brought the spark of both cultures into her personality and writing style.
All these elements play a role in her debut publication which has sold copies in multiple formats and countries around the world.
Miranda’s illustrated collection of her vivid and imaginative work ranges from light-hearted tales about friendship and family life to intriguing poetry about the world around her.
“I was seven when I started writing some of the stories included in the Poems and Stories for Little People,” said Miranda.
“I like yellow, always drink cold milk with food, and my favourite hobbies are reading, playing chess, netball, sewing and crafting. On movie nights on Friday evenings, I love binge-watching cool mystery series. In the kitchen, my favourite food is sushi, and mango is my favourite fruit, and I love baking with my mum. I love pasta Bolognese and porridge (especially from Grandma).
“I enjoy cake decoration classes. I dislike tight jeans or tights. I do love homework (not spelling though), playing basketball and netball, decorating for Christmas, candy, of course, and doing science experiments with my dad. I dislike courgette, sparkling water and sour or spicy things. I live with my mum, dad, and my little sister.
Her lessons have also often been the inspiration behind her poems and stories, such as her work on fables, the structure of poetry and even science. The talks which visiting authors have paid to the school have also played a part, encouraging Miranda’s belief that she, too, could be an author.
Ms Keane, Head of Preps and Pre-Preps at St Augustine’s Priory, said: “Poems and Stories for Little People is a wonderful achievement, we are all immensely proud of Miranda.”
“Miranda is the youngest author to be published by Wisdom House Publishing. St Augustine’s is rightly proud of her achievement and how it demonstrates the school’s ethos that ‘Our Girls Will Change the World’.”
