St Beuno’s – where “the whole place is aesthetically rich and exudes peace and a sense of being “home””.
We are a Jesuit spirituality centre with a team of Jesuits, lay people and other religious men and women. Founded in 1848 as a place for Jesuits to study theology, St Beuno’s has always been a place of prayer, becoming a centre for the Spiritual Exercises and shorter individually guided retreats from the 1980s. Our 22 acres of beautiful grounds overlooking the Vale of Clwyd and across to the mighty peaks of Snowdonia make for a unique and very special place. The opportunities for walking in the local hills just outside our grounds is also attractive to many of our guests.
We offer the full Spiritual Exercises of St Ignatius (the 30 day retreat) 3 times a year, usually in January, August and October. The Exercises can also be undertaken by making several shorter retreats in “stages” throughout the year.
We have a full programme of silent, individually guided retreats (IGRs), which help someone to step out from the usual rhythm of their life; to step into a place of prayer and reflection and then to step back into their daily lives with a renewed sense of God’s presence and action. On each day the retreatant meets individually with their retreat director to talk about their experiences in the retreat. This spiritual direction helps the retreatant to notice the ways in which God is present and active in their life and prayer, and also offers suggestions for how to spend the coming day. The programme offers IGRs of between 2 and 8 days throughout the year.
Additionally, we offer various themed retreats focussing on a range of subjects including finding God in the garden, in film, in writing etc. to retreats on mindfulness and yoga. We also offer courses and training in spiritual accompaniment for those who would like to explore the ministry of accompaniment and spiritual direction.
Whether you are in a simple, standard or ensuite room, you can be assured of a comfortable stay. Our rooms are well maintained and our communal areas spacious. Our chefs provide a daily changing menu of home-cooked meals – you will be offered breakfast, lunch and an evening meal every day, with fresh fruit, tea, coffee, biscuits and cakes also freely available during the day!
As one of our recent visitors said: “the place simply felt like the right place to be. The manner in which the retreat happened facilitated my own spiritual engagement. Atmosphere, surroundings, staff were all conducive to a really excellent experience.”
