An open meeting will be held in St Andrew’s Hall, Teesville, on Tuesday March 5 2024 from 7pm until 8.30pm in order to communicate information about the present state of St Peter’s Church, South Bank, Middlesbrough.
Built in 1903,The present church replaced a smaller one of 1874, which served the Irish and Lithuanian immigrants who worked in the smelting works by the Tees. The church is Grade II listed on the National Heritage List for England.
The Diocese of Middlesbrough has been concerned about the fabric of St Peter’s Church for some time and has commissioned several reports from professionals to inform any decisions.
A recent Health and Safety Report highlighted a wide range of concerned about the fabric, structure and safety of the building. In particular the problem of damp in the walls, crumbling masonry and loose roof tiles were reported as having “the potential to cause serious injury or death.”
Internally there was also a major problem with mould “of which the spores are dangerous to human health.” The building and its environs was general given a ‘very high’. health and safety risk rating.
