It is with great sadness that the Diocese of Hexham has to inform you of the death of Fr Patrick (Paddy) O’Connell who died peacefully in hospital on Monday 19 June 2023, aged 87.
Please pray for the repose of Fr O’Connell’s soul.
Fr Patrick’s body will be received into St Bernadette’s, Wallsend at 5.00pm on Sunday 9 July and Mass will be celebrated. His body will remain there overnight. On Monday 10 July his body will be taken to St Michael’s, Westmorland Road, Newcastle where Bishop Seamus will celebrate his Requiem Mass at 12.00 noon.
Fr Patrick’s body will then be taken to Cork, Ireland for burial on Thursday 13 July.
May he rest in peace.

Biography

Fr Patrick (Paddy) O’Connell was born 25 Spetember 1935, died on 19 June 2023; he was 87 years of age.
Fr Patrick was ordained to the priesthood on 17 June 1962 and has faithfully served the people of our Diocese in the following parishes:
Curate:
Ashington: St Aidan, October 1962 – December 1968
Billingham: Holy Rosary, December 1968 – October 1974
Newcastle: St Cuthbert, October 1974 – January 1980
Parish Priest:
Newcastle: St Joseph, January 1980 – September 1995
Leam Lane: St Augustine, September 1995 – September 2006
Retired in residence:
Wallsend: St Bernadette, September 2006 – June 2023
