It is with great sadness that the Diocese of Hexham & Newcastle has announced of the death of Fr John McElhone who died on Wednesday 28th February 2024, aged 77.

Please pray for the repose of Fr McElhone’s soul.

His Mass of Reception will be on Thursday 21st March at 6.00pm at Our Lady and Saint Aidan’s, Wallsend and his Requiem Mass at 12.00 noon on Friday 22nd March.

May he rest in peace.

Death Notice

Fr John McElhone, born 28th June 1947, died on Wednesday 28th February 2024; he was 77 years of age.

Fr John was ordained to the priesthood on 16th July 1977. He has faithfully served the people of our Diocese in the following parishes:

Curate:

Newcastle: St Mary’s Cathedral, November 1977 – May 1983
Kenton: St Cuthbert, May 1983 – September 1991

Parish Priest:

Kenton: St Cuthbert, September 1991 – August 1997
Jarrow: St Matthew, August 1997 – July 2002

Sabbatical: Loyola University, Chicago: July 2002 – December 2002

Wallsend: Our Lady and St Aidan, January 2003 – September 2021

Retired:

September 2021 – February 2024
