The Centre for Catholic Studies (CCS) at Durham University is the UK’s first permanent centre devoted to pioneering world-class research and teaching in Catholic theology in the public academy. We operate within the UK’s premier research Department of Theology and Religion, as assessed by our most recent research assessment (REF 2021). Our Department of Theology and Religion is ranked 7th in the world (QS World rankings 2024).
Founded in 2007, the Centre for Catholic Studies represents a creative partnership between academy and church: a centre within the pluralist, public academy for critically constructive Catholic studies of the highest academic standing.
We work in close partnership with the Catholic Church and other organisations, in multiple ways, to produce future leaders, foster talent, and support Catholic scholarship locally and globally.
The Centre also leads on a number of unique distance learning programmes in the study of Catholic Theology, enabling students to engage with major thinkers and to explore key systematic, historical and philosophical questions and debates in Catholic theology and Catholic social thought.
The courses include an MA programme, a Postgraduate Diploma, Postgraduate Certificate and a standalone module: ‘Catholic Theology: A Preliminary Tour’, giving students the utmost flexibility to find the option which fits around their own personal and professional commitments. All programmes are self-paced and can be studied equally well in any time zone.
